Structures that can cause knee pain include:
- Cartilage (it’s meniscus)
- Tendons e.g quadraceps (patella tendinopathy)
- ITB = Illiotibial Band
- Ligaments (medial and lateral collateral and anterior and posterios cruciates)
- Osteoarthritis (wear and tear)
- Referred pain from the lower back or hip
My assessment consists of looking at whole body movement, and then the knee specifically and surrounding joints.
If there’s been no direct trauma to the knee then a whole body assessment is especially important, as it’s likely that something else is contributing to your knee pain:
Case History taking – so very important to get the full picture about your pain
Gait – if you’re able: I’ll look at how you walk and sometimes run, if you’re a runner
Squat and lunge – looking for pain and movement control
Balance – checking for ease, wobbles and alignment
Orthopaedic Passive Tests – which helps to confirm if there’s structure joint damage of some kind
Hip passive range of movement
Ankle and foot range of motion
Ribcage (thorax) range of movement, with particular interest in rotation available
I then come up with a diagnosis based on all these findings and then a treatment and rehabilitation plan is formed.
